The TAHSEEN Model for Change

The TAHSEEN model for change emphasizes a comprehensive approach to development that addresses behavior change, quality improvement, linkages to other sectors and community involvement. TAHSEEN works with NGOs, women's groups, religious leaders and other community members to generate demand for FP/RH services, strengthen relationships between clinics and the communities they serve, improve the delivery of high quality FP/RH services, and improve systems and management at the MOHP central level as important parts of this model.

As the final USAID-funded population program in Egypt, building the capacity of implementing agencies and ensuring sustainability are integral to the design of the TAHSEEN Project.

TAHSEEN's efforts to improve the delivery of high quality FP/RH services include renovating clinics so that they offer clean, comfortable and private spaces for clients to receive family planning counseling, information and methods; training physicians, nurses, laboratory technicians and community outreach workers affiliated with those clinics; and collaborating with the MOHP to improve clinic management and supervision.

Improving linkages between the clinics and the communities they serve, while focusing on youth, gender equity, long-term sustainability and corporate social responsibility is an important part of TAHSEEN's overall strategy.

The model is flexible enough to allow officials in each governorate to choose from a menu of possible activities. In fact, we do not work "in" a particular governorate or "for" a particular governorate. We work "with" each governorate to design a set of activities that best meet their needs.

To this end, TAHSEEN works closely with other USAID-funded projects such as Healthy Mother/Healthy Child, Communications for Healthy Living, and Towards New Horizons/Towards New Visions demonstrating that a range of technical interventions can function synergistically to build a more effective health care model, while simultaneously enhancing MOHP health reform and national population programs.
